About

JALE is a New Haven-based clothing brand designed to spark thoughtful dialogue about institutions — the systems that shape us, confine us, elevate us, or break us.

The name is a deliberate play on “jail” and the Ivy League — a light-hearted wink at the prestigious college in our backyard, and a confrontation with its phonetic opposite: prison.

Through clothing and creative expression, JALE explores the striking similarities and contrasts between higher education and the carceral system — two powerful institutions that profoundly impact identity, ambition, and belonging. One is celebrated as a pathway to freedom and status, while the other too often becomes a cycle of punishment and stigma. We ask where these systems serve people well, and where they fail the people inside them.

Our tagline, “Made to Question...” is the whole philosophy: we create not just to be worn, but to provoke reflection and honest conversation — without prescribing what that reflection should be. The brand stays open to your interpretation: your perspective, your background, your beliefs. We’re not here to change minds or push agendas. Just to spark the honest dialogue that lets people question themselves, their assumptions, and the institutions around them — in their own way.
